CROTON-ON-HUDSON – Bethel Homes and Services is pleased to announce that Medical Director, Edward L. Merker, MD, CMD, has been named one of Westchester County’s Top Doctors for the tenth consecutive year.
According to Westchester Magazine, which publishes the Top Doctors’ list, Dr. Merker is one of 253 doctors, representing 53 specialties, so named in the October 2012 issue. Physicians receive this recognition from their peers and the results are researched, reviewed and vetted by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.
In addition to serving as Bethel’s Medical Director, Dr. Merker is also a senior member of a five physician Family Practice Group in Pleasantville, NY. Dr Merker co-founded this group as Family Medical Care PC 27 years ago. It is now part of a larger multi-specialty practice, North Star Medical Group PC.

In his role as Medical Director, Dr. Merker oversees the Attending Physicians at Bethel, reviews patient charts and care plans, has oversight of the Wound Care program, participates in Quality of Care Committee meetings, develops/streamlines policies and procedures, performs employee physicals and consults with clinical and administrative staff as needed, among other such responsibilities.
“Our geriatric population has specific health issues that need to be taken into consideration when assessing their cares and outcomes,” says Dr. Merker. “I am pleased to be able to offer such medical attention and advice to help our seniors live a higher quality of life. This vulnerable population is relying on us to take care of them and they certainly deserve the best care we can provide to enhance their day to day living experience,” says Dr. Merker.
Dr. Merker also served as a member on the Medical Board of Phelps Memorial Hospital Center as well as the Director for its Department of Family Practice. He presently sits on the New Ventures Committee at Phelps. He has also held the position of Medical Director at other local Nursing Homes.
