Ossining High's Big Science Win

Ossining High School took top honors Monday in the Intel Schools of Distinction Awards in Washington, D.C., for its project-based science programs.

As the winner of the Star Innovator Award, the highest honor bestowed by Intel, Ossining High School won prizes totaling $100,000 including a cash grant from the Intel Foundation and curriculum materials, professional development, hardware and software from sponsoring companies. Sponsors included Adaptive Curriculum, Pearson, Brain Ware Safari, DreamBox Learning, LanSchool and SMART.

“A philosophy of inclusion guides STEM instruction at Ossining where all students – regardless of test scores or grades – are encouraged to enroll in the school’s scientific research course, gain hands-on experience in STEM projects, and consider the possibility of a career in science,” read the citation about Ossining High School on the Intel website.

Five other schools were also honored for providing a rich, rigorous science or math curriculum by incorporating hands-on investigative experiences that prepare students for 21st century jobs. Winning schools were chosen from 18 finalists who had been recognized earlier this year.

“Intel is proud to honor the Intel Schools of Distinction Award winners for their commitment to encouraging and engaging students in science and math,” said Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Intel Foundation. “Through the recognition of these innovative programs, Intel hopes to form a greater awareness of the tangible successes schools can achieve by cultivating a hands-on science and math environment.”

Intel’s sponsorship of the Schools of Distinction Awards is part of the Intel Education Initiative, a sustained public-private partnership with governments in more than 50 countries. Through this $100 million-a-year initiative, Intel delivers programs that improve the effective use of technology to enhance 21st century skills and encourages excellence in mathematics, science and engineering.

Ossining was honored for fostering hands-on learning through a wide array of programs including its Science Research program and robotics program.
